To start off, some of us are planing a trip to MOAB next year (2013). We've been talking about it behind the scenes to get an idea of what's all involved.

I know it is still early for planning out the trip to MOAB 2013, but we need to start something now so people can save, plan, and adjust for work/personal time off. There will be following meetings (I'm sure) until weeks before we leave, just wanted to get the guys/gals together to get this started.

I would like to get the input from the individuals who may attend this pilgrimage to the promise land. Things that need to be discusses are lodging, travel dates/times, fuel costs, food, wheeling schedule, site seeing, shopping, spare parts, and anything else that I know I have forgot.

I've been working on the lodging idea of the trip to cut the cost and/or prevent any cost to the ones who take the pilgrimage. This will be discussed in details for the ones who go.
Our first meeting will be held at Pluckers on Bluebonnet on Thursday April 26th @ 6:30.

Just respond to this thread if you will make it. The only reason I chose that date was the LA4x4 meeting is the following week, and it gives us a chance to talk to anyone else or the club about who wants to come.

If you don’t plan on coming to MOAB, but want to come join us for some food/drinks that is fine too.

    Ed,

With all the reports from the vendors on Facebook I got the itch real bad during the Easter Jeep Safari. Then I realized that EJS 2013 would be about 2 weeks short of my 50th B-day - what a place for a Birthday Party. So the wife and I have already discussed it. Keep me in the loop - I may try to make it Thursday.

    Anyone have one of these...

They have some nice cabins that can sleep multiple people if anyone wanted to group up and pitch in toward that. Alternately there's ample camping. I have a plan/idea to hit up Moab next year myself, though I'll be coming during the Summer from the West Coast. The idea was to run White Rim road in the Jeep, weather pending. It's a 100 mile loop around Canyonlands and is a bit of a feat. to accomplish.

Brian. It won't be MUCH different than any other wheeling trip as far as preparedness goes. Cooler, water (plenty of it) 2 recovery straps w/o hooks, snatch block, winch (preferably, though if you're with a group I can't see that as being a huge issue), tools, tree saver (even though there aren't very many trees to save). Standard recovery gear basically. Obviously a full size spare is a necessity, tow points blahblahblah.

Contrary to popular belief though, Moab is easy. I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say a good 90% of it can be done in a stock rig, it's the other 10% that gives Moab the reputation it has. Stuff like Hell's Gate would be a breeze for you with the extra bit of wheelbase, whereas for me it'd be an enormous pucker factor. Potato Salad Hill, Mickey's Tub etc. are all more intimidating than they look, though Mickey's Tub is just a rock and a hard place (literally.) I've not actually done the tub myself just due to wheelbase issues, but Potato Salad Hill can be done easily with a little bit of throttle control. Come to think of it, you may wanna practice the latter a bit before you go

Anyhow, I'll be at the meeting. Even though it's quite likely I won't be convoying with you all, and may not even be there at the same time, I'd still like to kick back and have a few brewskis.

Also, if I can make a recommendation.... On your way back, detour through the San Juans in Colorado. You won't regret it. Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride all have some awesome sites and trails. Would give a bunch of you the opportunity to run Black Bear Pass

Everyone thanks for the good points. This is the whole purpose of having the MOAB meeting which will continue once a month if possible until the journey.

Matt brings up a good point about a list of spares/tools. Sydney brings up about one way shipping, and Ken brings up lodging/other trails.
These are all good ideas that need to be discussed to get this thing settled and hard coded into everyone’s schedule.

Ken you make a point about Telluride. I have a timeshare I am going to use for the MOAB trip at Telluride/surrounding area. This will cut back on lodging fees for a few of us, if not all, depending on who/how many are going. I will talk more on this during the meeting.

Basically we are thinking about a 10 day trip, details coming.

That's smart with the price of fuel and all. Not sure if Moab is even a possibility for me, but that could definatly make it more affordable as towing is many people's only option to get their junk th the trail head.

I agree Matt. Maybe we all pitch in to trailer up and drive back or vise versa. We can rent a SUV/Van (I know...) split the cost of fuel.

What ever works for me as long as my Jeep is with me when I am up there.

I'd suggest if this was a plan for y'all to drive up and trailer back. That way after you break your junk you aren't dragging back a fubar'd Jeep, but just waiting for it to be delivered.

Please let us know dates, costs, ect. as time goes on. I would love to go, but I can't ever get my crap together to make it to Sicily. Still if somehow I could go it would be sweet.

Kyle made the same suggestion not to long ago. This is a good idea.

Will do Matt. We have a year to get this going/planned that is why we are setting this up now. This will be an on going processes so updates will continue until GO LIVE.

If I ever swap my D35 and regear my axles (and get some other mods done), I will come if we can get a trailer. No way I'm driving my YJ that far with a 4 banger.

I'm definitely in for MOAB 2013. I have a prior obligation Thursday so Ed take notes and please keep me in the loop on everything. I am 1000% in on this though.

P.S. I'm definitely in for the trip!!!! haha got a couple more add-ons and I'll be "finished" for pre trip details. Just got gears winch and rear bumper to be done. Along with c-gussets, axle truss.

Sounds awesom, I would live to go! May be possible, maybe not. Looking at $1000 minimum in fuel at $4/gal round trip, 2 days driving each way, plus no telling how much else.
I have thought about this before, but no way I can go without wife and kid, so it would have to fall on the week they are off from school. Anyone have the 2013 dates yet?

The meeting we plan on having will discuss the best/possible dates for the trip. We are looking at 10 days total (4 for travel like you stated), other days for wheeling/etc. It will be sometime in May - things can change. My wife is going, and possibly my daughter, so school is surely something we will work around. I have a 'suggested' time line that I will post later, but I'd rather hear what other have to say before I do.

As for budgeting, so far I am looking at $2500 for the trip. I have a few options to help save much $$$$ on lodging, but don't want to post it directly to the site.

    You coming Thursday night?
